We’re going to file this one under ‘Announcements No One Ever Saw Coming, Not in a Million Years’. Ys vs. Trails in the Sky is being remastered and localised here in the West for the first time ever, 15 years after its original release.
This is a crossover fighter that combines two of Falcom’s core properties: Ys and Trails. It launched all the way back in 2010 for the PSP, and never left Japan in an official capacity. It’s coming to both PS5 and PS4 in 2025.
The re-release is being published by a newly established outfit called refint/games, and it comes with a bunch of improvements and additions over the original version. It’s got HD graphics, it runs at 60 frames-per-second, it’s got local versus and online multiplayer, and it’s got brand new English voice acting — which is crazy.
Shockingly, Ys vs. Trails in the Sky — known as Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki in Japan — was actually name-dropped by Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo when we interviewed him a few months back.
We asked if the developer would ever consider making a Trails fighting game — given the size and diversity of the franchise’s cast — and Kondo replied: “Actually there is a game that’s kind of like this that exists, called Ys vs. Sora no Kiseki, which is a fighting game with an action system.”
“If I’m ever allowed and we had the resources [laughs], we’d love to be able to make something like that again.”
