When is The Outer Worlds 2 release date? It’s been a while since Obsidian Entertainment’s first space venture, but it had much of the same DNA as the Fallout series. This isn’t necessarily surprising, given that Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, the creators of the Fallout series, were the game’s directors. Now, we’re finally getting the chance to head back to Halcyon in The Outer Worlds 2.
The first in Obsidian’s space adventure series was an enjoyable RPG game, perhaps hampered by the studio’s upcoming Microsoft acquisition. The Outer Worlds 2 was confirmed to be in active development in June 2021, but there has been radio silence ever since. We consider this as a good thing, as a release date window has now dropped, and it’s soon. Here’s what we know about the window for a The Outer Worlds 2 release date and what we can speculate about the upcoming space game sequel.
The Outer Worlds 2 release date window
As revealed in a trailer during The Game Awards 2024, the release date for The Outer Worlds 2 is now set for sometime in 2025. The space game lands on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles.
The Outer Worlds 2 was first announced in 2021 during the Xbox Showcase presentation, and very little was revealed until the TGAs on December 12, 2024. Before then, all we really knew about the game was “New solar system, new crew, same Outer Worlds,” thanks to the tagline. Now, thanks to various sources, we have much more to go on. Predominantly, though, the Obsidian game sticks to the irreverent sense of humor from the first game.
Obsidian has a busy 2025 ahead with the Avowed release date falling in the first quarter, so we wouldn’t expect The Outer Worlds 2 to drop until much later in the year. Whenever it arrives though, it’s still sooner than we were expecting given the long-awaited surprise TGA reveal, and we can’t wait.
The Outer Worlds 2 trailers
The first The Outer Worlds 2 trailer was released back in June 2021 and, well, told us not very much at all. That classic Outer Worlds humor was instead called upon once more to confirm that “the developers haven’t finished the design, or finished the story, or finished any gameplay that’s ready to show.” Since then, it’s all been quiet on the Outer front.
Fast forward to three-and-a-half-years later though, and some substantial progress has been made. The Outer Worlds 2 is ready for a 2025 release date and gameplay is shown off in the TGAs trailer at the top of this page. This time, the trailer promises “more action, more weapons, and more graphics.” Well, better graphics, but you know what that narrator is like. They also go on to say that this game “took three times longer to make, but will almost certainly be two times bigger.”
The Outer Worlds 2 Secret Level
On top of the gameplay shown in the TGAs trailer, we can also start to speculate on the The Outer Worlds 2 story thanks to the game’s episode in the Amazon Prime anthology series Secret Level. In the trailer above, our protagonist goes through a gruelling acid test in the name of love.
We already know that Auntie Cleo carries out unethical experiments, so it could be that this plays a greater part in The Outer Worlds 2. We were lucky enough to attend a preview screening of the episode and we don’t want to spoil anything ahead of its release, but it could also be that big changes at Auntie Cleo could be on the way.
Hopefully, more details will come in thick and fast as we approach the The Outer Worlds 2 release date, and we’ll be able to add even more to this guide. In the meantime, check out our recommendations for more upcoming PC games for you to look forward to, including many of those also announced at The Game Awards.
