Cancer, a global health challenge, claims countless lives, leaving devastation in its wake. However, experts believe that preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of developing this disease.

Celebrity dietician Nicole Andrews recently took to Instagram, sharing a video that quickly went viral, warning about two common dietary elements that could contribute to cancer development.

According to Nicole Andrews, alcohol and processed meat are significant contributors to cancer development. She cautions that alcohol consumption not only elevates the risk of liver cancer but also increases the risk of breast, mouth, throat, oesophagus, and bowel cancer.

“When alcohol enters the body, it is converted into acetaldehyde. This process damages DNA and leads to the growth of cancer cells. Therefore, alcohol acts as a carcinogen,” Andrews said.

Nicole Andrews stated that processed meat is also a carcinogen. “Processed meats like ham, salami, bacon, and sausages (including frankfurters and chorizo) increase the risk of cancer. These products contain harmful chemicals, such as nitrates and N-nitroso compounds, which are particularly linked to bowel cancer. Additionally, cooking these meats at high temperatures creates dangerous substances like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic amines. Furthermore, the haem iron found in beef breaks down into harmful compounds during digestion, causing damage to the colon,” Andrews said.

Eating sugar does not cause cancer

It is widely believed that sugar is very dangerous. However, it does not directly cause cancer. Sugar does not increase cancer cells, and consuming it in moderation poses no danger. However, excessive sugar consumption can cause problems.

“If sugar intake increases, the body will gain weight by adding more calories. Excess body fat increases the risk of cancer,” Andrews said.

Obesity – A Major Cause of Cancer

Andrews stated in a recent interview that obesity is a major cause of at least thirteen types of cancer.

“Excess fat accumulation in the body causes chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic changes. These factors create a favourable environment for the growth of cancer cells. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight is advisable to reduce cancer risk,” he added.

Balanced diet

A healthy, balanced diet plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of cancer. According to Andrews, prioritising high-quality protein sources like fish, eggs, poultry, and lean meat is recommended. Additionally, incorporating a variety of vegetables into your diet is key. A balanced diet doesn’t necessitate complete elimination of specific foods, but rather emphasises consuming a diverse range of nutrient-rich options.
